General Information:

This old resort in Elmira was converted from a farm around 1958. It was a pretty hot spot for skiers and other patrons during the 1960's. It eventually closed down, probably by the 1970's. Some of the structures still stand as of 2024 but it appears to be a private residence. There was also a Kandahar Ski Resort near Fenton, but I am not sure if there is an affiliation with this place given the unusual name.

It has been said the old resort is haunted. Here is a YouTube video pertaining to that.

Grand Rapids Press Feb 1968:

Kandahar Barn Skiers have taken over where cows once lived in comfort. Co-owner Sid Coale talks to Bill Lahti a frequent customer who doubles as barn minstrel. It used to be the center of a 120 acre spread that was one of the most flourishing potato and dairy farms around. If only its old occupants could see it now.

Skiers instead of cows and there is an airstrip, bar, outdoor swimming pool, paved patios, fireplaces, and beds for 86. This is Kandahar Barn, which attracts much attention as it sits by US131 near Elmira along the main ski route northward. Kandahar is typical of the unique establishments which have sprung up in the north country since the ski boom. It shifted from cows to people in 1958 when the winter sports movement was just getting underway.

It now is open to all although frequently ski clubs book it. Jolly fireside songfests buffets and Saturday night prime rib specials keep many visitors happy. Lately the growing number of touring snowmobile buffs too have discovered it. The airstrip was built mainly to accommodate Sid Coale of Orchard Lake, one of the original owners who also operates an aerial photography business
