Mt Mancelona opened as a ski resort in 1952. It was a smaller place catering to a more local crowd but still very nice. At some point, the lifts and such were getting too costly to keep going so the ski resort aspect of the place closed. There is a nice article from 1976 below on Don Smith, the owner at the time, discussing the difficulties of keeping the place going as a ski resort.
As of 2022, the lodge at Mt. Mancelona lives on and the reviews are great. You can stay overnight and engage in various winter activities like hiking, sledding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Or, you can hang out by the campfire. It looks very cool as you get to see a vintage Michigan ski resort and have fun doing other things too.
