(Lou) Smith's Furniture opened in downtown Ypsilanti in the 1940s and was an architectural gem, exhibiting a clean mid-mod design. Irving Tyner bought the store in 1944. In 1949 he opened The Hi-Way Store" at 1050 E Michigan as detailed in the article below. Those stores operated under Tyner Furniture but eventually both closed and sat empty. Fortunately some local folks brought the building back at 15 S Washington and it is now housing offices. The iconic sign remains. The Michigan Ave store still sits empty as of 2024.
