Sallan Jewelers goes back to the early 1900's in Downtown Detroit. It ended up being a small chain of jewelers that had stores in Detroit, Northland Center, Eastland Center, Southgate, Briarwood Mall, and Southland Mall. I worked at the Northland Store back in the late 1970's. Originally Northland was an outdoor mall and Sallan was laid out as such. When the mall was enclosed, little was changed by Mr. Sallan. While most stores would open up the walls to foster walk-in traffic, we still had the one main entry door with display windows on the sides. That can be seen on the postcard shot below.
I remember Mr. Sallan had his office upstairs in our store. He must have been the son of the original owner. I got his lunch every day at Sander's next door. He liked cottage cheese with French dressing on it and was a pretty good boss. It was a fun place to work overall. Eventually, Sallan's was acquired by J.B. Robinson Jewelers in 1978. They have closed many of their stores and the Sallan stores were shut down also. Some were in malls that no longer exist.
