From Michigan Place Names
Oakland County: founded and named by Sherman Hopkins in 1830. He found here the location for water-power which he sought. It was the first white settlement in Addison Township, which had been named for pioneer settler Addison Chamberlain. Mr. Chamberlain became its first postmaster on Nov 15, 1836, succeeded by George Larzelier in 1838. The village was platted in 1840 [Mrs. Dan Haddrill, PM] PO Archives]
