The Center Stage opened in 1979 as a rock venue mainly. There were some very big acts that performed here. It was one of a few rock venues that were in the west side of town. I went there once and the show was very lightly attended. I thought it was Rick Derringer but according to the concert databases online he never played there.
As I was in a few bands over the years and very interested in live shows, my sense was the Center Stage always struggled. The location was decent, with the I-275 on ramp just a few hundred feet west up Ford Rd. For some reason people didn't like it, I remember hearing that from many fellow rock and roll fans. The venue branched out and tried all kinds of entertainment over the years, big bands, comedy, live drama, rap shows, sporting events, pay-per-view events using a big screen, art house films, and even male strippers.
The shows started to taper off in frequency in the 90's and there were a few up until 2001. It is at that point the advertising in the newspapers falls off. Looking at the historical aerial photography it appears the venue was demolished in 2005. There is a Gordon Food Service on the lot but it looks to be a newer build, replacing the old venue.
