The Strand Theatre was built in downtown Muskegon Heights in 1923. It was not just a theatre but an entire mixed-use building including retail and apartments. It was bought by the City of Muskegon Heights in 2001 in the hopes they would be able to restore the empty building to its original mixed-use set up. As of 2008 the building is still empty but the city recently invested money in fixing the leaking roof to keep the building from further deterioration.
