The first version of this hotel goes back to 1882. The problem with these old, large wooden structures is they burn and this place was no exception. It burned multiple times and was rebuilt multiple times. This was similar to many large hotels of its kind around the state. Many of them burned too. This one was mostly an American Plan place, meaning all lodging, meals and entertainment were included in the price. Typically the owners expected the guests to stay for the entire summer season with these arrangements. They usually closed down in the winter. The hotel was promoted heavily in newspapers around the mid-west.
The hotel was on the west shore of Mullett Lake, along US-27. Today the mailing address is Cheboygan. There is a private residence on the spot as of 2023. The steamer Topinabee serviced the hotel dock, which seems to still exist. They also had their own smaller boat from what I could see. In the later years they could arrange seaplane access also. The hotel was gone by the early 1980's, probably long before. Mentions in the newspapers ended in the early 1960's. The postcard photos may vary in that they may be photos of different versions of the hotel. The site was the same however.
Some of the operators of the hotel were E. R. Bailey, John Bailey, and Ed Maloney (or Moloney depending on the ad).
