I made some assumptions on this one so I am about 90% sure I have the name of this motel right. Looking at the 1953 aerial, it started out as a few cabins which is a typical situation. Eventually a standard motel structure was built that still stands as of 2023, probably operating as apartments. One of the ads I found indicates it was known as "Bergeron's Pine Rest Motel". I checked Ancestry.com and found a Joseph Bergeron who did operate cabins and a gas station in that area.
The location given was in Masonville, which is a tiny hamlet south of Rapid River. There is also Masonville Twp which contains Rapid River. I can't find anything else along that stretch that looks like a motel, so putting that together with Mr. Bergeron leads me to believe the structure along Bay Shore Dr was indeed the old Pine Rest Motel. The last tidbit is the census form indicates the Bergerons lived north of the railroad track. That fits the location at 10177 also. It was pretty standard in those days for the proprietors to live on the site of the motel. It was definitely a motel, so its worth documenting either way. If I receive any new info, I will update this entry.
