This motel was built between 1951 and 1957. Sometime between 2002 and 2005, it was demolished to make way for a parking lot. I lived in that area for many years in the early 2000's and it was always very run down as I recall. The motel was open for business as late as 2001. I found an article about a horrible crime that occurred there at the time that's too depressing to elaborate on. There was a robbery in 1983 and it was used as a hideout for some murder suspects in 1978. This is a bit odd as Commerce Twp/Union Lake is not a particularly bad part of town.
The motel probably looked nice when it was built. In those days, Union Lake, Walled Lake, and Commerce were like going "up north" for the auto workers living in Detroit. In the summers, the wife and kids would live full time at the lake cottage while the dad would head out Grand River (pre I-96) to join them on the weekends. I have also posted an old Union Lake postcard for the hell of it.
