This motel is permanently closed as of 2022 according to Google. This motel, formerly known as the Gale Motel or Gale's Motel depending on which article you read, was built in 1950 by Juanita and Gale Coffin. The article stated it was built on the "log cabin corner" of US-31 and Cheboygan Rd which is M-66. The current location of the Levering Motel fits that description. The general look is the same but some remodeling and reconfiguration was done over the years.
Gale Coffin passed away in 1969. Interestingly, the place was "destroyed by fire" in 1972. The news article clearly shows what was once called Gale's Motel as the structure and awnings match perfectly. By that time, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Howard were running the place. Somewhere along the way the place was restored to full operation after that and renamed the Levering Motel. It appears a small addition was added, extending the front wing. The sign was moved to accommodate that.
This motel was in the news in 1961 as one of the guests, a 16 year old boy, was accused of murder. He left a thank-you note for Mrs. Coffin as she had allowed him to spend the night free of charge because he only had 9 dollars on him. The handwriting on the note was compared to an earlier sample and it was identified as being his. Several Michigan residents spotted the suspect as he was on the run from Holland MI where had allegedly shot 2 young girls, 11 and 12 years old. He was eventually apprehended in South Dakota and returned to Michigan for trial.
