General Information:

Southgate, a small suburb southwest of Detroit near Wyandotte, was blessed with two great drive-ins, the Fort George Drive-In and the Michigan Drive-In. The Michigan Drive-In opened July 22, 1948 with Larry Parks in “The Swordsman”. It had a capacity for 900 cars when it first opened; this was later increased to 1,200 after a renovation in 1977. Like its brother on Fort Street, the Michigan Drive-In was operated by Nicholas George and Co-Operative Ct. The Michigan Drive-In closed in 1984.

And I think I know why the Michigan Drive-In closed. Sometime during the late 1970's it stopped listing in the Detroit papers as I have a December 10, 1980 Detroit News and the Michigan did not appear in the showtime listing.

I managed the Holiday Drive-In, I also worked at the Fort George, the Jolly Roger, and was the unfortunate person that was given the sad task of putting the final marquee on the Michigan Drive-In stating that it was closed. The location on the site lists it as Wyandotte, but it was actually Southgate. It is now a strip mall and a Chi-Chis and Best Buy. (Christoper Allen 7-16-00)
