Hi, Lakes Drive In was owned by my Aunt Gloria (my Mom's sister) & Uncle Art. I spent every summer vacation staying with them when I was school age. Didn't realize they were my babysitters all summer. But it was always the best time. The monkey was a Capuchin. So they named him "Capuchie"??

First of all, the monkey's name was not Corky. They actually had a talking parrot who was named Corky. I'm not sure what the monkey's name was. I am a niece of the owner. Gloria Perkola Hamel was my dad's twin sister. I remember the drive-in when I was about 4-6yrs old (1975-1977). I remember the little Ferris wheel and the concession stand. I would purposely order a sundae from my uncle art because he would load it with cherries and whipped cream!! I also remember my Uncle Art patrolling the lot with a flashlight. I remember being scarred for life from the movie Jaws and Carrie! ??. I remember falling asleep on the way home and my dad carrying me in the house. I would do anything to go back to those days! ?.

This theater was thought to be an empty lot, however it was far from empty. The remnants of the ticket booth, the concession stand and marquee were still there. Note the awesome tile work in the concession stand that spells out Lakes. This drive-in was located right in the middle of a residential area and was surrounded by houses. It must have been quite a site seeing all of the cars clogging the streets on movie nights in the summer!

Capuchie was the monkey's name. Because he was a Capuchin monkey. Gloria and Art were my Aunt and Uncle. I spent summer vacations up there. Best summers ever.

I was a projectionist at the theatre and remember Art and Gloria well. I remember one night in particular that the fog was so bad that I cut short the movie by changing over the reels as soon as I threaded it up. The projectors had a water cooled carbon arc light source and we had to watch to make sure that when the toilets were flushed it didn't get too hot. Gloria had a pet monkey. Can't remember the name of the Monkey. Many a night spent there working and when I wasn't working, we would load up the various cars with adult beverages and friends and enjoy. I was also a projectionist at the PIC and the LODE. Sorry to say that they are also both closed.
