My uncle was projectionist and groundskeeper from the late 70's until the theater closed. I saw a bunch of great movies at this drive-in. But my favorite part was watching my uncle when the films would break and he would have to remove the whole reel and quickly splice the film back together before people got angry. When the theater went xxx, they were forced to put up sheet metal on top of the fence so passerby were not able to see the movies. Now that I think of it when it did go to xxx my mom was offered the equipment from the playground and the only thing she took was the swing set minus the slide. I just replaced the original swings a few years back, but she may still have the fiberglass childrens safety swings. The last marquee I remember changing as part of the daytime maintenance was behind the green door. somewhere I have some of the marquee letters, but not sure if they are from tuscola or the starlite- will have to ask my uncle. I will take some pictures to post when I come across this stuff.

I went to the Tuscola in August 1975 to see "Walking Tall 2." I stepped out of my car (white 1969 Chevelle Malibou 307) and locked myself out. I didn't let it bother me much, as I watched the movie, and then had some people help me get the door unlocked. Having the speaker in the window helped and we got the door lock opened with my shoe lace (well, we didn't have a coat hanger).

The Tuscola Drive-In south of Bay City on M-15. I believe is about 3 or 3 1/2 miles south of the city. The Tuscola may have been able to stay in business had they had better owners. During its last years of operations the Tuscola was turned into an XXX-rated drive-in theater. This so incensed the neighboring residents that they got the drive-in shutdown. I believe it was around 1984 or 1985. The marquee sign and concession building of the Tuscola is all that remains of that theater. It was last used in early 1990s as an auction business.
