The name for the restaurant is named after Long John Silver from the novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. They used to be a private owned company but they went bankrupt in 1998. Their parent company Yum! sold Long John Silver's to LJS Partners LLC and A&W Restaurants to A Great American Brand LLC in September 2011 to focus on expanding in China.
