Devon Gables was sort of an institution in Detroit. It was a favorite fine-dining and banquet hall for the well-off people in the Detroit Metro area, particularly the crowd in Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills. It was up there with Fox andHounds, Machus Red Fox and the like. The society columns in the Detroit Newspapers were filled with references to this place for decades. They start in the late 1920's and continue until the closure in the 1970's.
I am not positive the restaurant only had one location and Telegraph and Long Lake. The more recent one appeared to be on what is now called Devon Gables Court which would have been back off the road somewhat. There may have been an earlier incarnation right on Long Lake however. I will figure that out and update this listing. The restaurant was once owned by Herbert Craw who also owned Fox and Hounds. It was also operated by Laura May Turner from 1932 to 1967.
By 1972, Devon Gables had run its course after a fabulous run. A new owner came in and opened up Port O' Three after heavily remodeling the old Devon Gables building. It sounded interesting but alas it also closed. I don't think there is any trace left of Devon Gables today.
