It was hard for me to decide which category to put this place in. It started its life as a car dealer so I went with that but it has been a restaurant for far longer. A building is on the 1951 aerial photo but according to LoopNet, the dealership building goes back to 1960. The first mention in the newspapers I found was from 1970 as Dick Morris Chevrolet but I am sure it was something else prior to that.
Dick Morris eventually moved over to Haggerty Rd and Ladd and operated there for many years. I bought a few cars from that location. That is now gone also but I included some photos of it for completeness. Getting back to this location, the dealer became Walled Lake Chrysler Plymouth around 1972. By 1976, it switched to used cars using "The Car Store" name. I remember a smaller building being in the middle of the parking lot which was the office for the car lot. By 1982, the place became World of Wood Heat. That was liquidated by 1984.
Next up we have what I believe is the first incarnation of a restaurant in the place which was Key Largo. One of the managers of the famous Charlie's Crab was involved. That incarnation was pretty popular for quite some time. I recall that initially, the menu was a bit ostentatious for me. Most folks in those parts were looking for inexpensive bar food and this place was heavy on seafood and more of a fine dining concept. Regardless, the investors had connections and they got plenty of good press. However, the menu was later changed.
By 1999, the place was called Bogey's Bar and Grill or Bogey's on the Lake. By 2002, it was called The Boathouse. By 2013, it was called Bayside Sports Grille & Bar. As of 2023, it is operating as The Beach Tiki Bar and Boil. I haven't visited recently but a few years back I went and the pizza was good. It is a nice setting right on the lake and you can sit on a deck area outside. I will get back over there soon, get some better photos and report back here. I may have missed a few businesses that operated here over the years, these are what I found after going through the newspaper archives and my personal memories of it.
