The Fox Village Theater was opened at the Maple Village Shopping Center in 1967, for Fox Eastern, which was a subsidiary of National General Corp. It was designed by Drew Eberson, and cost around $500,000. Later, the Fox Village was sold to the United Artists chain, and after it was sold to Mann Theatres, in 1978, it was twinned. A year later, two additional auditoriums were added to the original building, brining the seating total to over 950. Briefly closed in 1992, the theater was reopened by MJR Theatres. Today, as the Village Theater, the independently operated quad screens second-run fare at bargain prices.

UPDATE: The theater closed for good in 2005.

Village 4 theater shuts down; owner cites high expenses Heat cost $8,000 monthly, he says; site was citys only 2nd-run house Wednesday, April 27, 2005 BY MIKE RAMSEY News Business Reporter The Village 4, a second-run theater in the Maple Village shopping center, closed Sunday after four years of operations. Owner Greg Urrutia said the theater was too expensive to run and it wasnt performing well enough to keep it going. "I wish I could have kept it open, to be honest. The cost of doing business in Michigan nowadays is astronomical. It was costing me $8,000 a month to heat the place." The Village 4, once known as the Fox Village Theater, showed movies that had left first-run cinemas. It charged $2.50 for tickets from Monday-Thursday and $3 Friday-Sunday. It is the only second-run theater in Ann Arbor. Urrutia and his brother also run the Village 7, which is in Briarwood Mall. The pair opened that cinema in October. Urrutia said he doesnt plan to open another theater in Ann Arbor. "Right now I think Ann Arbor is pretty much overscreened," he said. "Thanks for supporting us; we tried to do our best, but it didnt work." The other venues in town are The Michigan Theater on East Liberty Street, Quality 16 on Jackson Road, Showcase Cinemas 20-screen megaplex on Carpenter Road, and the State Theater on South State Street. Stacy Slater, a spokeswoman for the Maple Village mall owner, New Plan Excel Realty Trust, said several prospective tenants have expressed an interest in the space.
