Entry Date: 8/30/2007 - Rob Houchins: I worked at the West from 1985 through 1989. I still have my red jacket from the Nick George days as well as my vest from the AMC era. If anybody from my era sees this, shoot me an email at rhouch@yahoo.com I''d like to keep in touch with my friends from the West... I''ve been trying to find Eric Miller for a long time.

Doug Durham was my fav manager...

Entry Date: 8/16/2007 - John Gosdzinski: Okay so the theatre did close in 1999 but, your wrong about any of the theaters themselves not being functional. I worked there for 1995 till the day we closed. We had no idea it was closing the corporation just shut it down. I am in one of the pictures on this page, I''m behind the concession stand with one other person.
Entry Date: 10/24/2006 - Scott Michaels: I worked for Nicholas George Theaters for a couple of years, in the early 80's - mostly at The Woods in Grosse Pointe.
On opening night of The Americana West, one of the films was The Awakening, a mummy horror film.
I had to dress like a mummy and stand in a stairway with a sign that said, "See Me in The Awakening!"
I still have my souvenir drink napkin and a few of the keychains from opening night.
Happy time.
Entry Date: 5/14/2005 - Moviegirl: The Americana West actually closed in May of 1999.
I worked there for almost exactly a year, from May of 98-May 99.
As we put her to rest, we thought it fitting to close the curtains (which hadnt been used in years but were still functional!) in houses 3 and 4 (the ones that were not split up in the remodel).
I have tons of pictures of this place!
Entry Date: 1/10/2004 - Cinema Treasures: Opened in 1980 for the Nicholas George chain of theaters, the Americana West was named after George's original Americana in Southfield which opened in the late 60s. Built as a quad, the West featured two 550-seat auditoriums, and two with 325 seats. Designed by noted theater architect Louis Wiltse, the West was probably one of the last Michigan movie houses featuring curtains in front of its original four screens. Wiltse's design of the Americana West closely resembeled that of his 1974 Denniston I & II Cinemas in Monroe, Michigan.

In 1986, the West was sold to the AMC chain, and four years later, the two larger auditoriums were each themselves twinned, making the theater a six-plex.

The Americana West 6 closed in 2001, and has since been converted into a fitness center.
