Regular Site Update for Friday, February 23rd, 2012
I posted some new stuff today. See the "Latest Pictures" links below. Most notably, a new "old" drive-in has
come to our attention thanks to Vince. We don't know the name but for now I have it listed under the
Monroe Drive-In. The
theater was built just after WWII (around 1946) and was dismantled within a few years. That makes 4 drive-ins in Monroe history!
Think spring because the Capri Drive-In
will be open in a few weeks to kick off the season. It is important for us all to support the drive-ins and small
town theaters more than ever. Many owners are pondering the notion of whether to invest in digital projection and attendance will be
a major factor in their decision. 35MM prints will more than likely be discontinued within the next year or two.
The investment required for digital projection can run $80,0000+ PER SCREEN so they are going to need more customers to help
offset that cost. The good news is that in the case of drive-ins the increased luminance digital will provide
improves the viewing experience significantly. I know of 2 drive-ins in Michigan so far that are definitely going
to make the leap. Hopefully the others will do the same so this great American tradition is preserved.
